On March 06th, find yourself in a world of magic and adventure! Let witchcraft and epic war stories and medieval romances with beautiful princesses transport you to a different time and place for the evening.
We are delighted to present to you for the first time in Bangalore, Dastan-e-Chouboli, performed by none other than the ace dastangos, Mahmood Farouoqui and Danish Husain. Dastan-e-Chouboli, a Rajasthani folk tale adapted by celebrated writer Vijaydan Detha, was subsequently adapted for a dastanic telling. Princess Chouboli has vowed to marry the person who makes her speak four times in a single night. A braveThakur who shoots a hundred and eight arrows everyday through his wife's nose ring takes up the challenge. Will he live up to it?
The dastangos will be performing Dastan Mehtaab Jaadu Ki, a typical episode from the Tilism-e-Hoshrubachapter of the Dastan-e-Amir Hamza. Afraasiyaab (the king of magicians) wants his aides to stay alert asAmar Ayyaar (the king of tricksters) and his disciples are up to some mischief in the tilism. The tricksters now enter the boundary of tilism governed by Mehtaab Jaadu (the magician who can create the brightness of the moon), a known aide of Afraasiyaab. What follows is a series of tricks.
About Dastangoi
The word dastangoi refers to the art of storytelling, a compound of two Persian words dastan and goi, which means to tell a dastan (story). Dastans were epics, often oral in nature, which were recited or read aloud and in essence, were like medieval romances everywhere. Full of tales of adventure, magic and epic wars, dastansmapped new worlds and horizons, encountered the unseen and protected the hero through many travails and lovers as he moved on his quest.
Mahmood Farooqui received support from India Foundation for the Arts under the
Extending Arts Practice programme towards research and exploration of Dastangoi.
