Does the endless archive exist?

Join us for a conversation with Dayanita Singh, who will speak about her journey with photographs and her relationship to the photographic image. Dayanita draws continually from her extensive photographic oeuvre, allowing her images to be endlessly edited, sequenced, archived and displayed as mobile museums, books and objects. In this session, she will delve into how the ‘archive’ informs her work and how she is constantly ‘mining’ it—splicing, changing, sewing and transforming how it is shown. Dayanita will also engage with who is the photographer of the future, through a conversation with Menaka Rodriguez from IFA.

Dayanita Singh uses photography to reflect and expand on the ways in which we relate to images. Over the last 40 years, Dayanita has created works that transcend genres, explore the boundaries of photography and expand our understanding of the photographic image. Her recent works include a series of mobile museums formed from a deep dive into her own photographic archive. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; the Art Institute of Chicago; Hayward Gallery, London; the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi; and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.

Launched in 2018, The IFA Archive is a space that holds the diverse materials of the projects supported and implemented by IFA over the years, currently featuring materials from over 500 projects online at theifaarchive.org/

Date with The Archive is a series of talks by artists and researchers across different practices who have used archives extensively for their creative work, to bring to focus the potential of the archive as a significant resource for artistic and scholarly explorations.
