The artist Ramanujam transforms into a black dog……
And disappears into the canvas.
—K Ramanujam's fantasy landscapes constantly juxtapose the real and the surreal, A Gathering at the Carnival Shop, a film by Mochu, attempts to recapture this imaginative space.
The film explores the pen and ink drawings of Ramanujam from the perspective of a viewer. Interweaving anecdotes of the artist's life with work from his collection, the film provides an intriguing glimpse into Ramanujam's world.
Ramanujam lived and worked at the Cholamandal Artists' Village in Chennai, situated along the south-eastern coast of India; it sought to bring together community living and contemporary art. The realisation of a radical dream, the village was set up in 1966 by a group of young artists from The Madras College of Art, under the guidance of their facilitator, K C S Panicker. The work produced by the artists significantly contributed to The Madras Movement of Art.
The film will be introduced by S G Vasudev, who will share his experiences of Cholamandal Artists' Village and Ramanujam, and will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.
Mochu is a filmmaker and artist, trained in film and video from the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. He creates black pen drawings and collages inspired from various sources.
Mochu received a grant for this project from IFA under its Arts Research and Documentation Programme.
