Join us for an Open House at Lamakaan, where Tanveer Ajsi, our Programme Executive, Arts Research, will be in conversation with artists, scholars and other practitioners about IFA and its programmes. At this informative and interactive session, Tanveer will be available to answer queries ranging from grant criteria to the application process and more.

Yousuf, Epsita and Ashima will explore diverse terrains and offer interesting perspectives on language, culture and identity in our evening grant showcase.
Yousuf Saeed’s presentation, entitled, Early 20th Century Popular Print Culture in Urdu, will examine the historical and socio-political relevance of printed images from popular Urdu literature and its transformation from a language reflecting the cultural plurality of North India, to one associated with Islam. Yousuf is a Delhi-based filmmaker, author and an archivist.
Epsita Halder’s, presentation entitled, Pain as Piety: Glimpses of Muharram from West Bengal will present glimpses of Muharram from West Bengal. The presentation will study the varied renderings of the narrative of the Karbala Battle as recounted by Shia Muslims across different districts of West Bengal. Epsita is a professor of comparative literature at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, a prolific poet in Bangla, and a novelist and a columnist for the Ananda Bazar Patrika.
Ashima Sood’s, presentation entitled, Praying with open hands : Hybrid Hinduism in the age of Hindutva, will highlight ways in which elements of religious and spiritual pluralism are woven into lyrical and musical idioms, rites and modes of worship associated with community kirtan or devotional music practice in middle and lower middle class South Delhi. Ashima is a Hyderabad-based writer and researcher on the urban.
