India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) invites you to Music, Memory and Community, a panel discussion with grantees Ronidkumar Chingangbam (Akhu) and Nirmala, moderated by Arundhati Ghosh at the Nabanna Earth Weekend (NEW), Santiniketan.

Through songs, stories and histories, Ronidkumar Chingangbam (Akhu) will discuss notions of Manipuri identity embedded in the lives of the Meitei diaspora in Assam, Bangladesh and Tripura.

Nirmala will present her work on Partition songs from Haryana and the lasting effects of the divide on the daily lives of the survivors, especially women.

Ronidkumar Chingangbam (Akhu)
Akhu is an Imphal-based singer, songwriter and poet. He is the founder of the folk rock band Imphal Talkies. He has released four full length albums and several singles.
Ronidkumar Chingangbam (Akhu) received a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, under the Arts Practice programme.

Nirmala
Nirmala is an independent scholar based in Kurukshetra. She has extensively written on folk literature in various reputed Hindi magazines and journals, and compiled a book of Haryanvi folk songs. She is also a folk singer and theatre practitioner.
Nirmala received a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, under the Arts Research programme made possible with support from Titan Company Limited.

Arundhati Ghosh
Arundhati is the Executive Director at India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore.

Nabanna is a ten-day folk art and crafts fair which provides a platform for crafts persons to sell their wares and interact directly with their buyers. For over 10 years Nabanna has performed this service, combining it with art activity for children and an evening cultural programme. NEW expands the scope of Nabanna to include a weekend festival of arts and ideas featuring writers and artists, cultural and creative thinkers. All creative fields are included for a rich cross pollination of ideas, from traditional crafts, arts and literature, to contemporary design, cuisine and food cultures, sustainability and environmental concerns.
