Thursday, July 09, 2020 | 06:00 PM - 07:30 PM | Zoom

As the lockdown and call for physical distancing continue, we, at IFA, are discovering new ways of engaging with technology and online platforms to share the work of our grantees. We are delighted to introduce a virtual series of conversations, film screenings, and performances titled Throwback Thursdays with IFA, where everyone is welcome.

On Thursday, July 09, 2020, we present a conversation with Savita Uday, a researcher, educator, farmer and folklorist who runs a not-for-profit organisation called Buda Folklore located in the Uttara Kannada region in Karnataka. Please note that this discussion will be conducted in Kannada and she will be in conversation with Krishna Murthy TN, Programme Officer, Arts Education, IFA.

Savita Uday received a grant from IFA, under the Arts Education programme made possible with support from Citi India.

Savita over the years worked alongside the members of the Halakki, Siddi and Kare Okkalu communities that reside in the Gokarna-Ankola region, Uttara Kannada, to document and revitalise the wealth of songs and stories that are part of their oral tradition.

The project supported by IFA enabled her to extend this work by involving the students and teachers of the fifth, sixth and seventh standards of a Government Primary School located in the region. In a year, Savita conceptualised and facilitated storytelling sessions by bringing in members of the Halakki, Siddi and Kare Okkalu communities to the classrooms, storytelling competitions for the students by encouraging them to collect stories from their parents and grandparents, and created a storybook by compiling these stories with illustrations by the students. Visual artist Antara Mukherjee who has been working alongside the communities for many years collaborated with them on this project.

Click here and register to attend the showcase on zoom. It will also be streamed live on facebook. No prior registration is required to join the live streaming.

Join us to listen to Savita about her experience of working with children; the project; and stories of the communities residing in the Uttara Kannada district, about their relationships with the land, river, sea and all other things that are part of their local environment.

(All Throwback Thursdays with IFA are available on our Youtube Channel. Click here to watch the first three sessions of the series.)
