India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) invites project proposals for arts education in their schools from government school teachers in Karnataka.This initiative is an extension of our work under the Kali-Kalisu initiative that aims to forge collaborations between teachers, the school community and local artists within their regions.
 
In the last two years, IFA has given eleven grants to teachers for projects across the state including Koppal, Haveri, Chamarajanagara, Dharwad, Mandya, Bidar and Gadag. These grants have paved the way for exciting and innovative field-based applications of arts education within the government school context and re-energised the community's relationship with education and the school culture. Projects have focused on various art forms such as visual arts, performing arts and literature; as well as themes such as environmental concerns and re-introducing folk cultures into education.

The objectives of the grants are

  • Encouraging teachers to look beyond their subject teaching and explore the possibilities in arts education.
  • Creating opportunities for teachers and artists to become joint stakeholders in the school community.
  • Enriching curriculum and classroom teaching through artistic interventions.
We hope the grants will set in motion processes that will continue beyond the grant period. 
 
Who can send us proposals
Subject teachers and art teachers from Karnataka Government Schools.
 
Scope of the Projects 
Projects undertaken could do any of the following: 
  • Bring multiple stakeholders such as parents, students, teachers, art practitioners and others together for an artistic project.
  • Explore potential of regional/local art forms and practices in the classroom.
  • Promote student-centered activities such as an arts cell within the student community which will meet regularly to experience and explore various art forms (theatre, visual arts, film, literature, photography, music etc).
  • Use the arts to sensitise the school and community about local realities such as social justice and environmental issues.
  • Other long-term or short-term projects that engage with arts education.
The teachers selected for the grant would be required to
  • Develop a concrete pedagogical approach that could later be disseminated. 
  • Provide timely documentation (audio, video, reports, and photographs) for internal reporting. 
  • Submit a process document, interim narrative report, a comprehensible final report along with a financial report at the end of the grant period, which should describe and assess grant related activities, accomplishments, problems and lessons learnt during the term of the grant.
Project Proposal Submission Process & Guidelines 
 
Deadlines
  • You are welcome to approach us to ask questions, discuss your ideas or send us a draft proposal for our suggestions and comments by or before April 30, 2015.
  • Your final applications should be in hard copy and reach us on or before May 15, 2015. You are responsible for the delivery of your proposal and supporting material to IFA by the closing date. Late applications will not be accepted.
  • If your proposal is short-listed, you may be requested to make yourself available for a presentation and discussion at IFA (Date to be determined). Your proposal will be assessed with the help of external evaluators, and IFA's decision on grants will be final.
  • You can expect grant awards to be announced by June 15, 2015. 
Your proposal should cover in detail
  • Your past and current work explored in and through the arts
  • Your project idea with reference to the school you work in and the anticipated duration of the project
  • The proposed work plan and methodology of your engagement in the school
  • The proposed outcome of your project and how you imagine this outcome will contribute to the field and discourse of arts education.
  • Budget for the duration of the grant
  • You may choose to write your proposal in Kannada, Hindi, Urdu or English. 
Project duration
  • Your project may have a minimum duration of nine months and a maximum duration of eighteen months.
Budget
  • You can request for support up to Rs 1,00,000/-
  • Our funds will cover only project-related personnel costs, activities and travel, and can provide for modest equipment and materials, if necessary. Please ensure that each budget category pertains to a specific item of project-related expenditure. Please budget for an accountant's fee subject to a maximum of Rs 3000/-
  • You may budget an honorarium of maximum Rs 10,000 for yourself and an honorarium not exceeding Rs 20,000 for external resource persons' for the entire duration of the grant.
  • Please note that the total grant amount is inclusive of the honorariums and accountant's fee.
  • Please do not budget for institutional overheads, building costs and infrastructural development.
