Watch 'A Singular Journey: The career and life of Riten Mozumdar' online | A talk by Ushmita Sahu and Mortimer Chatterjee
India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) in collaboration with the Bangalore International Centre (BIC) and Association of Designers India (ADI) organised a talk earlier this month, on the life and work of artist-designer Riten Mozumdar—one of the most significant figures in the history of modern Indian design. In his lifetime, Mozumdar worked and exhibited nationally and internationally, and opened up Indian design to creativity and innovation. Yet the scholarship on his contribution remains scarce, and on the margins of Indian art and design history.
At the session, the speakers Ushmita Sahu and Mortimer Chatterjee spoke about their engagement with Riten Mozumdar’s practice, to bring his work out of anonymity and explore certain areas of undocumented cultural, political and institutional histories between the 1950s to 1980s. Watch the recording of the talk here.
Ushmita Sahu is a visual artist, scholar and independent curator based in Santiniketan, West Bengal.
She received a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, under the Arts Research programme, with support from Titan Company Limited.
Mortimer Chatterjee is a gallerist. He runs the Chatterjee & Lal gallery in Mumbai, along with his partner Tara Lal.
